{"id":3807,"date":"2014-02-03T09:50:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T09:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourlocality.org\/lothianloop\/?p=3807"},"modified":"2014-02-03T09:50:39","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T09:50:39","slug":"frugal-holiday-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lothianloop.com\/?p=3807","title":{"rendered":"Frugal Holiday Fun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Schools in East Lothian break for half term on Friday 7 February and pupils go back to school on Tuesday 18th February (Monday 17th is a staff in-service day).<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ideas for a fun-filled family break without spending a fortune.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out and About<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotrail.co.uk\/kids-go-free\">Scotrail Kids Go Free<\/a> ticket not only give up to two free kids off-peak travel with each adult, you also get one free child entry to lots of great attractions including <a href=\"http:\/\/seabird.org\/\">The Seabird Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camera-obscura.co.uk\/\">Camera Obscura<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lothianbuses.com\/timetables-tickets-maps\/fares-and-tickets\">LothianBuses<\/a> have a Family DAYticket which allows up to 2 adults and up to 3 children unlimited travel together, all day, for only \u00a37.50<\/p>\n<p>Just like playing with someone else&#8217;s toys, going to a different park, woods, beach or sport centre is always loads more fun than the local one. Why not explore a neighbouring area as if you were a tourist?<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be active, why not check out these local sports venues:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoyleisure.com\/Centre.aspx?comp_id=4\">Aubigny Sports Centre, Haddington<br \/>\nDunbar Leisure Pool<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoyleisure.com\/Centre.aspx?comp_id=5\">Loch Centre, Tranent<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoyleisure.com\/Centre.aspx?comp_id=6\">Meadowmill Sports Centre, By Tranent<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoyleisure.com\/Centre.aspx?comp_id=7\">Musselburgh Sports Centre<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.enjoyleisure.com\/Centre.aspx?comp_id=3\">North Berwick Sports\u00a0Centre<br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercatgait.com\">www.mercatgait.com, Prestonpans<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If wild places rock your world, then search the database of woods to visit at <a href=\"http:\/\/visitwoods.org.uk\/en\/visit-woods\/Pages\/get-involved.aspx\">Visit Woods<\/a>.\u00a0 There are loads of ideas for outdoor activities at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturedetectives.org.uk\/\">Nature Detectives website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you or your children need a bit of an incentive to explore the great outdoors, you could combine your walk with a spot of geocaching &#8211; a sort of high tech treasure hunt using sat nav or the GPS on smartphones.\u00a0 There are geocaches all over the world and East Lothian has a fair few hundred of them.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great way of of discovering new places.\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geocaching.com\/\">Geocaching.com<\/a> to get started.<\/p>\n<p>You could follow up your trip to a cafe afterwards.\u00a0 Community Centre cafes offer great value for money.\u00a0 East Lothian community centres with cafes include Bleachingfield, Musselburgh East, Ormiston, Port Seton, Longniddry, Pennypit &amp; Prestonpans.\u00a0 Contact details and opening hours can be seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastlothian.gov.uk\/directory\/37\/community_centres\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture &amp; Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Fraser Centre has a varied <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefrasercentre.com\/cinema\/\">programme<\/a> of family-friendly films ranging from classics such as Whisky Galore to the latest blockbusters such as Gravity.\u00a0 Tickets are all by donation.<\/p>\n<p>DadsWork, with funding from Prestonpans Support from the Start, are having a Go Mad with Dad free Mid Term Movie Matinee on Wednesday 12th February 2014 at The Fraser Centre showing Disney&#8217;s Planes.\u00a0 Doors open at 1.00pm and movie starts 1.15pm. This movie matinee is for dads, male carers and their children. Further information is also available from Kevin Young. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.<\/p>\n<p>East Lothian\u00a0Council\u00a0Museums Service\u00a0manages <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastlothianmuseums.org\/content\/pages\/visit-our-museums\/dunbar-town-house.php\">Dunbar Town House<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johngraycentre.org\/about\/museums-service\/\">John Gray Centre<\/a> in Haddington and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastlothianmuseums.org\/content\/pages\/visit-our-museums\/john-muirs-birthplace.php\">John Muir&#8217;s Birthplace<\/a> in Dunbar, all of which have free entry.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastlothianmuseums.org\/content\/pages\/visit-our-museums\/prestongrange-museum.php\">Prestongrange<\/a> visitor centre at Prestonpans is currently closed but the expansive site is open to explore.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coastalmuseum.org\/\" name=\"Coastal_Communities\">Coastal Communities Museum<\/a> run in partnership with the Coastal Communities Museum Trust is also free to visit.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a316 for adults and \u00a39.60 for children, entry to Edinburgh Castle could hardly be described as &#8220;frugal&#8221;.\u00a0 However, a family membership to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-scotland.gov.uk\">Historic Scotland<\/a> might cost less than you think.\u00a0 An annual membership for 2 adults + children equates to \u00a37.04 (or\u00a0\u00a35.70 for concessions) per month by direct debit.\u00a0 This would give you unlimited access to all Historic Scotland sites including East Lothian gems such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-scotland.gov.uk\/propertyresults\/propertyoverview.htm?PropID=PL_089\">Dirleton Castle<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-scotland.gov.uk\/propertyresults\/propertyoverview.htm?PropID=PL_284&amp;PropName=Tantallon%20Castle\">Tantallon Castle<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-scotland.gov.uk\/propertyresults\/propertyoverview.htm?PropID=PL_243&amp;PropName=Seton%20Collegiate%20Church\">Seton Collegiate Church<\/a>.
